Requiem for 25 000 chickens

2015 - La halle Pont en Royans

2016 - La Panacee, Montpellier

Requiem compose par Jim Husky

A musical piece for acoustic instruments and choir created for 25,000 factory raised meat chickens who died during an electrical power outage.

In August 2014, Olivier Gueguen, a French farmer lost 25,000 chickens because of an electrical power outage. These meat chickens were raised industrially and their lives should have lasted at least 49 days, but due to this electrical outage, they suffered starvation and thirst causing them to die at 27 days. Chicken consumption is rising, and these deaths are minor in regards to the total 106 million tons of poultry eaten worldwide in 2013. Nevertheless these incidents are frequent and bound to happen again.

I asked my father, a composer, to write a requiem for those 25,000 chickens that died in Brittany, France. The requiem will be around 10 minutes long and composed for an orchestra and choir. The music will be played along footage of Olivier Gueguen’s factory, from the egg to the store shelf. The piece will be a poetic homage to the lives lost out of neglect and absurdity and through humour raise awareness on increasingly atrocious farming practices.
